Adler & Mcleod

Making poetry accessible and relevant

In 2002, Barbara Adler was the youngest performer to win a spot on the acclaimed Vancouver Poetry Slam team, at the age of 18. She is a performer and former organizing member of Wordplay: Poets in Schools project. Brendan McLeod is the winner of the 2004 National Individual Finals at the Canadian Spoken Wordlympics, awarded to the top performance poet in Canada. In June 2005, he represented Canada in the World Slampionship held in Rotterdam, and won the 2006 3-day Novel Contest.

Adler & McLeod typically perform for one block either in a classroom or auditorium, for a broad cross-section of students (usually English, Writing, Theatre, and Fine Arts classes). This performance introduces students to performance poetry mixed with storytelling and rapid-fire literary rap, performed solo, together, and occasionally accompanied by guitar.   For longer sessions, the duo leads workshops in smaller classes for generally 25-35 students, focused on writing for performance.
